Africa has faced immense environmental tragedies. Currently, severe
droughts, the worst seen in 60 years, have created food shortages
throughout various countries, making survival extremely difficult. Some
nations, such as Kenya, are dealing with minor food shortage, while
others, like Ethiopia and those countries in the Horn of Africa, are
faced with dire conditions where starvation is imminent.
Pollution is another environmental concern, which poses the threat of
disease, and inhibits the health of the people that live in the affected
areas. Throughout Africa, clean water is a well-documented scarcity, and
much water has been polluted due to the oil industry. The lack of
freshwater is one of the biggest factors that prevents Africa from
advancing and developing farther.
